To celebrate the first birthday of the Mondrian Hotel in Shoreditch, London, fashion designer and award-winning artist Jack Irving was commissioned to create an abstract, futuristic sculpture for the hotel’s facade. Jack Irving is probably best known for the iconic costume that he designed for Lady Gaga – the inflatable Sea Urchin Showgirl dress.
His works draw inspiration from deep sea life and nature to fuse the worlds of fantasy and experimental design.
Having previously worked with inflatables, Irving knows how effective the medium is for dramatic art installations. “I wanted to create a sculpture that represents the future of Mondrian, that both draws people in and celebrates the playfulness of the brand,” he explained.
Here at Glow, we specialise in creating custom shape sculptures and inflatable art installations all over the world and were therefore the obvious choice for this exciting collaboration.
The team at Glow Inflatables worked carefully with the artist to ensure his original vision was replicated as closely as possible. ‘Futura’ is a 12m wide and 8m high abstract inflatable rocket design blasting off in a bronze mirror nylon finish covering the entire façade of the hotel.
With the expert installation team from Glow on hand, the rocket was officially installed on 31st August 2022 and will remain throughout London Fashion Week and the London Design Festival.
David Lockhart, the General Manager of the hotel explained that the inflatable sculpture demonstrates Mondrian’s positive attitude for the future. He is really pleased that local artist Jack has brought their vision to life so brilliantly.
