Currently touring Europe, a thought-provoking inflatable Lady Justice has been commissioned by environmental campaigners Friends of the Earth. This iconic figure was created by Glow Inflatables Ltd in collaboration with Chinese Dutch artist Sioe Jeng Tsao, who is known for her social conscience and interest in sustainability.
Tsao provided the team at Glow Inflatables with their inspiring 2D design from which the team at Glow developed and installed the impressive 3D sculpture. Lady Justice is typically depicted as a blindfolded woman holding scales and a sword representing fairness and impartiality in the legal system. However, in this enormous piece she is bent down on her knees with a knife in her back. This powerfully implies that all is far from fair and impartial in the world of big business.
The inflatable Lady Justice has so far popped up in Paris and Vienna, getting the attention of governments on behalf of environmental activists and advocates. The beauty of an inflatable creation from Glow ensures that Tsao’s Lady Justice isn’t just a static monument; she can quickly and easily be deflated, transported and reinstalled to spread her message across Europe. It is easily installed in any prominent location, making it a natural meeting point for rallies and protests.
With accompanying banners which oppose the making of large profits on the back of human rights, Tsao’s design for Friends of the Earth embodies the legal inequalities and environmental exploitation carried out by many of the major companies. She reminds us that justice and sustainability go hand in hand and that we must protect our planet for future generations.
